Two Hampton Roads cities are pushing back on rapid data center expansion. Chesapeake has ended "by-right" approvals for data centers, now requiring every proposal to get council approval, while Virginia Beach enacted a 12-month moratorium on new data center permits as it drafts stricter regulations.

Councilmembers and residents in both cities voiced concerns about noise, environmental impacts, and the loss of open land. These moves come as Virginia—already home to a massive data center industry—faces growing public debate over how (or if) these facilities fit into local communities.

A new feature film titled America’s Favorite is set to begin filming in Hampton Roads this summer, according to a recent WAVY report.

This thriller centers on a journalist who becomes a TV host, and will use a variety of local backdrops, including Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach.

The production highlights the region’s growing popularity as a filming destination, promising increased visibility and potential economic benefits for the local community.

The Virginia Beach School Board has approved a significant step toward transforming the defunct Bayside 6th Grade Campus into a public park, marking a milestone in a project years in the making.

Most of the 18-acre plot will become green space, while a portion will go to neighboring Pembroke Elementary. This initiative follows dedicated efforts from the Aragona Village community, who successfully advocated for a park over previous housing proposals.

Though the agreement isn't legally binding yet, city officials will shape the park’s design, with funding coming primarily from the school district’s budget. Final approval now rests with city leaders.
